The Big Knit – do your bit.

Sep 21, 2010   //   by Vonnie   //   News  //  2 Comments

One of our regulars at The Life Craft – Karina – mentioned that the Perthshire Amber – Dougie McLean festival was repeating it’s “Big Knit” drive for knitted squares this year in aid of Shelter Scotland (for those interested, the history of the Big Knit is available here). When I discovered that the request was for the squares to be made from Artesano DK I got in touch with Shelter Scotland to offer any participating knitters a 10% discount from us and I’m now thrilled to be able to say that if you order the approved colours from us and use the code BIGKNIT at the checkout you will receive a 10% discount on these yarns and your postage costs. This offer is also available instore and again, only on the relevant colours.

The approved colours are:
Fern
Peru
Ecuador
Brazil
Chile
Venezuela
Cocoa
Demerera

For any knitters who’d like to participate but can’t attend the festival in person, each square must measure 6″ square. Dolly McLean says that for her, this equates to 30 stitches across 58 rows but this would obviously be dependant on your tension!

For those of you who aren’t sure what Shelter Scotland do, I have a quote from them for you (and a link to their site too.)

We live in one of the richest countries in the world, yet millions of people in Britain are struggling to meet their housing costs. Tens of thousands more wake up every day in housing that is run-down, overcrowded or dangerous. Many others have lost their home altogether. The desperate lack of decent, affordable housing is robbing us of security, health, and a fair chance in life. Shelter believes everyone should have a home. We help more than 170,000 people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. We also tackle the root causes of bad housing by campaigning for new laws, policies, and solutions. Visit http://www.shelter.org.uk to join our campaign, find housing advice, or make a donation.

Purls of Wisdom

Sep 9, 2010   //   by Vonnie   //   News  //  4 Comments

Our busiest day at The Life Craft is a Monday, in no small part due to the attendance at our popular “Purls of Wisdom” group which runs between 5-9pm every week. Not always the same faces but a diverse and hilarious group of people who come together to knit, crochet and socialise with some like-minded souls. I thought I’d share some photos from this week’s group and extend an invitation to anyone who has considered coming along – it’s great fun!

If you’d like to be added onto our mailing list then please Email Vonnie.

Firstly, I’m DELIGHTED to announce our continuing partnership with Busy Bees craft studio. From this Thursday 9th September we will be hosting their famed ‘Messy Play’ sessions twice a week on a Monday and a Thursday from 10.30-11.30am. This class is aimed at preschoolers from 18 months up (although younger babies are more than welcome with a little bit of help from an adult) and features a variety of messy activities like painting, gloop, playdough and more. Each session is £4.20 but you can also buy 6 or 10 consecutive passes at a discounted rate.

Secondly, I’m similarly excited to announce that we have secured a crochet tutor! Join Carol next Sunday (12th September) between 3-6pm as she walks you through the basic stitches that make up crocheting. Participants will leave the class with a solid understanding of the different stitches and some finished designs. The class costs £25 which includes a crochet hook and a ball of Milla Mia yarn in a colour of your choice. To book please Email Vonnie.

Thirdly, Jenny is away on holiday this week but spent last week designing and mocking up a pattern for a new class that we’ll be running in a couple of weeks time to make a little girl’s dress! If you’d be interested in this class please Email Vonnie to be added to the waiting list. The dress in question looks a little like this (NB – Small blonde girlchild not included)
